What Is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

DBT is a type of cognitive behavioral treatment developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP. It involves individual psychotherapy and group skills training classes to help people learn and use new skills and strategies to develop a life that they experience as worth living. DBT skills include skills for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

DBT was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Research has shown that it is effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What Are the Benefits of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

DBT involves a patient and therapist working together to resolve the contradiction between self-acceptance and change. Part of this involves offering validation as a means of helping a person become more receptive to making positive changes in their life.

Some of the various benefits of DBT for people struggling with addiction include:

  • Learning strategies to tolerate and accept life circumstances
  • Learning to identify and analyze destructive behavior patterns and replace them with healthy ones
  • Changing thought patterns, behaviors, and actions that are not helpful in your recovery journey
  • Learning to communicate more effectively with therapists, psychiatrists, and other mentors
  • Learning to recognize one's strengths and grow them in a positive manner
