Arizona Motivational Interviewing Therapy
Motivational interviewing is frequently used to address substance abuse and behavioral health issues. Motivational interviewing progressed from Carl Roger’s person-centered approach to counseling and therapy. It consists of motivating an individual to change behaviors by encouraging the client to discuss their own need to change. The role of this therapy is mainly to induce a dialog about change and commitment. Listening to the client and reflecting the thoughts and feelings back to the individual, so that they can hear their own motives and incentives.
The client may not be ready to commit to change, but with this process it can help them find passage through the emotional stages of change essential to find their motivation.
Motivational Interviewing approach supports four principles:
- Expressing empathy and avoiding arguing
- Developing discrepancy in the individual’s thoughts and thinking process
- Progressing through confrontation
- Supporting the individual’s belief that he/she can successfully make a change
