On the front of a box of sugar laden artificially flavored cereal (hint- there is a leprechaun on it) it states that there is whole grains- guaranteed! Some truth about your cereal, however, when you look at the ingredients (and there are 34), there is blue, red and yellow dye, sugar, corn syrup, artificial flavors and 2 ½ teaspoons of sugar in ¾ of a cup. And with only 2 grams of fiber, you are sure to start your day with one heck of a sugar spike and inevitable sugar crash.
Obviously if you are buying that kind of cereal, you know that you are going to get a lot of sugar and additives. However, when you look at a “healthier” cereal, you might be surprised!
On a well known “healthy granola” one ½ cup serving can have 420 calories, 10 grams of fat and 26 grams of sugar. That works out to be 6 ½ teaspoons of sugar! There are not the artificial flavors found in the other cereal, but there is almost 3 times the amount of sugar.

Studies have indicated that sending our kiddos out to school after a high sugar, low fiber, artificially flavored cereal their performance at school will suffer, as will their mood. And whether it is you or them eating this much sugar at the first meal of the day, sugar cravings will haunt you for the next 18 hours.
So what do you eat for breakfast? Simple. It’s protein. You can find that in eggs- between 6 and 10 grams of protein in a single egg depending on quality of egg. You can also find that in beans (think huevos rancheros), or you can have nut butters and whole grain toast. You can also find protein in oatmeal~ up to 6 grams per serving. Throw some nuts and berries on there and you won’t have that 10:00 crash that leads to coffee and donuts in the break room. And your kids will have more focus and concentration in the classroom.
