Medical Detox Program in Prescott, AZ

Discover the Many Benefits of Medical Detox

Medical detox can be an important first step for many on the path to recovery from addiction to an unsafe substance like drugs or alcohol. If you have a strong addiction or have been using an addictive substance for months or longer, medical detox might be a good starting point for you, too. At Decision Point Center in Prescott, Arizona, we offer medically supervised detox designed to keep you safe, healthy, and comfortable at every stage of rehab by minimizing the risk of dangerous withdrawal symptoms. With a full team of compassionate addiction recovery professionals and a dedication to delivering the highest level of care possible, our program can be tailored to help you or your loved one begin the recovery process confidently and securely.

More specifically, we intentionally use a “smaller” approach to medical detox that allows you to stay readily connected to medical and support staff at all times. We only have six beds in our medical detox center, which means we always have time to give every patient the attention and help they need. While there, you will get help from a doctor who provides medical supervision, nurses who are available 24/7, a detox technician for specialized care, and even a case manager during the week for extra guidance. When you are here, you’ll have every tool you need to succeed in medical detox.

Medical Detox Stages

Medical detox involves corrective and preventative medical care performed in a specialized facility under the supervision of trained medical professionals who know how to look for and react to withdrawal symptoms in a patient. By being under the care and watchful eye of trained medical specialists, you will never be far from help if you start to experience a dangerous or painful withdrawal symptom, like vomiting, tremors, fever, etc.

Most medical detox programs can be sorted into three primary stages, including:

  1. Assessment: The first stage is assessment, where medical professionals evaluate the patient's medical history, substance use history, and physical and mental health status. This information is used to develop an individualized treatment plan that is tailored to the patient's specific needs.

  2. Stabilization: The second stage is stabilization, which involves helping the patient manage the physical and emotional symptoms of withdrawal that may occur during detox. Medication-assisted treatment, therapy, and other supportive measures to ease the discomfort of withdrawal and reduce the risk of complications may be used in this stage.

  3. Preparation: The third and final stage is preparation for ongoing treatment and recovery. This step involves creating a plan for ongoing care and support to help the patient maintain sobriety and prevent relapse. Referrals to addiction treatment programs, therapy, support groups, and other resources to help the patient achieve and maintain long-term recovery are often used to wrap up a medical detox program.

Benefits of Medical Detox

The benefits of medical detox for people struggling with addiction are numerous, including:

  • Safety: Detoxification can be physically and psychologically challenging if severe withdrawal symptoms form. Medical detox increases the safety of this process by introducing medically trained professionals into a rehab program.

  • Medical intervention: Some people may require unique medications to manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of serious complications. Medical detox allows for the administration of these medications as needed, making the withdrawal process more manageable.

  • Comfort: Medical detox can provide a more comfortable experience for people going through withdrawal. Our team can help manage discomfort, anxiety, and pain, making it less likely for patients to give up and return to substance use.

  • Reduced relapse risk: For some people in rehab, medically supervised detox can lower the risk of relapse during the withdrawal period.

  • Gradual transition: After completing detox, you can feel better prepared for the next stages of addiction treatment, such as inpatient or outpatient rehab, than you might have with other treatment programs.

Is Medical Detox for Everyone?

As mentioned, medical detox is extremely useful for people with severe addictions, especially when addicted to a particularly harmful substance. It is not necessary for everyone who enters one of our addiction recovery programs to undergo medical detox, but it is recommended for many.

Consider the following when wondering if medical detox is right for you:

  • Severity of addiction: Medical detox is typically recommended for people with moderate to severe substance use disorders and those who have been using drugs or alcohol heavily or for an extended period.

  • Type of substance: Some substances, such as alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines, can lead to potentially life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. Medical detox is especially helpful for people addicted to these substances.

  • Co-occurring medical conditions: People with underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, liver problems, a history of seizures, or even severe mental health disorders, may require medical detox to manage potential complications during withdrawal.

  • History of severe withdrawal: If someone has previously experienced severe withdrawal symptoms before, it may be an indication that medical detox is necessary for future rehab attempts.

  • Age and general health: Older people or those in poor overall health may require medical detox to manage the risks associated with withdrawal.

  • Safety concerns:  If there is a risk of self-harm or harm to others during withdrawal, a medically supervised detox facility may be the safest option.

  • Lack of support at home: Anyone who lacks a stable and supportive home environment, where they can be monitored and kept safe during withdrawal, may benefit from medical detox, which provides a controlled and supportive setting.

  • Pregnancy: Pregnant women with substance use disorders should always seek medical advice regarding detox, as the health of both the mother and the unborn child must remain a priority.

To determine if you need addiction detox as part of your drug or alcohol addiction recovery plan, we use a thorough intake process when speaking to our experienced team. During this intake procedure, you will be asked various questions about your addiction and medical history, allowing us to gain an understanding of where you are from a physical and mental perspective. This process helps us know what care is best for you because there are differences between a person who is detoxing from alcohol and someone who is detoxing from opiates, and so on.
