April 26th is Prescription Drug Take Back Day

People can get rid of their unwanted and expired medications without any questions asked at more than 5,600 collection sites nationwide between 10 AM and 2 PM locally. The last event like this was held this past October, where officials collected about 650,000 pounds of drugs.

Prescription drug abuse has become the number one addiction-related problem in the country. More people are misusing medications than those taking drugs like cocaine and heroin combined. Additionally, the number of overdose deaths caused by prescription drugs now outnumbers traffic fatalities.

Multiple national surveys show that many young people obtain these drugs from their homes or friend's homes. Cleaning out old prescriptions is just as vital as safegaurding current ones, so these disposal sites are a huge public health and safety service.
