The Importance of International Overdose Awareness Day

Drug addiction and overdose are responsible for over 70,000 deaths per year. To combat this rising statistic, Sally J. Finn established the first Overdose Awareness Day event on August 31, 2001. Overdose Awareness Day has since turned into an international event, and communities worldwide are participating and contributing in candlelight vigils and special activities this August 31. The purpose of this event is to provide educational resources to communities and provide families with a special place to discuss their losses.

If you’re interested in supporting International Overdose Awareness Day, you can host an event in your hometown or check the International Overdose Awareness website for an event occurring in your area. There are currently two official events being held in Arizona: the Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition in Thatcher is having a lantern sendoff at 6:00 pm, and the 4th Annual International Overdose Awareness Day event is being held in Phoenix at Aurora Behavioral Health.

You can host an event by downloading community actions kits from the International Overdose Awareness Day and the National Safety Council websites.

If you can’t attend an event in person, there are still ways for you to participate:

  • You can show your support by wearing purple clothing and accessories on August 31
  • You can donate to the International Overdose Awareness Day website
  • You can purchase official badges and wristbands
  •  You can join the National Safety Council’s social candlelight vigil
