Do Drug Addicts Ever Fully Recover?

AddictionIf you have struggled with addiction, you know how challenging it can be to get your life back to normal and live a clean, honest, healthy life unencumbered by old habits. But going to rehab doesn’t magically solve the problem and is only half the battle. The other half requires you to make the decision every day to stay the course and maintain your sobriety. This begs the question: do drug addicts really ever fully recover?

Undoing the Damage of Substance Abuse

In order to even begin answering this question, it is important to consider what your definition of “recovery” is. Recovery isn’t just making the choice to stop taking drugs – it is a multifaceted process that requires ongoing effort, but with the right support, it is a very attainable goal. While there is some debate as to whether an addict can be “cured,” it may just be a matter of semantics. Once you make the decision to change your life, anything is possible. It starts with believing that you can.

Recovery Starts with the Right Treatment

In order to effectively treat addiction and promote recovery, it is important to identify and treat the underlying cause. For example, if a person’s addiction is rooted in trauma, or if the person’s best chance of success lies in behavioral therapy such as anger management, these are things that can improve the chance of long-term success. Another important element of recovery is ongoing support and accountability. It can be beneficial for people to attend support groups or participate in activities that keep them active and healthy. At Decision Point Center, for example, we have an Adventure & Recreation Program where clients can build confidence, strengthen body and mind, enjoy opportunities for self-reflection, and have fun in the great outdoors. Many of our clients have found that these activities help them break down negative beliefs and restore faith in their potential to live a clean and purposeful life.
