Decision Point Center Believes Working With Families Promotes Recovery For Everyone.
Decision Point Center believes that family therapy is a major component in a client's treatment and recovery process. Addiction impacts the entire family and when all affected members are engaged in a recovery process, the likelihood of a positive outcome for the addict increases exponentially.
It is vital to understand that the “rules of relationship” change drastically when we are involved with an addict. Rather than trusting, and operating primarily from their hearts, family members must learn to constantly ask themselves whether what they are doing in relation to the addict is enabling or an attempt to control their loved one’s addiction and/or behavior.
During Family Week, family members learn to identify ways in which they may have been enabling, trying to control the addict, or disengaged from the addict’s life. Decision Point staff recognizes that both enabling and attempts to control stem from a potent combination of love and fear. However, family members are supported in recognizing how their well-intentioned attempts to keep their loved one safe create a lot of pain and suffering in their own lives, and ultimately that they are powerless to impact the addict’s addiction. Through psycho educational and therapeutic processes family members learn communication tools, boundaries, and ways to take care of themselves so that their lives are no longer revolving around the addict. They also learn that it is possible to have increased serenity and peace in their own lives regardless of whether the addict is sober or active in their addiction.
While education is important during Family Week, the primary goal of the week at Decision Point Center is to begin the process of healing fractured relationships within the family system. The family therapists work to create a safe place where no one is shamed, blamed, or attacked. They support all participants in feeling emotionally safe enough to let down their defenses so that they can share vulnerably, from their hearts, with one another. This is a foundational component of reestablishing emotionally rich and meaningful relationships within the family.
Decision Point Center provides a safe place where family members find support from other families and know they are not alone.
